“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”
When I was a child, my favorite summer treat was banana punch ice cream. The combination of pink and yellow blossoms I found brought that taste straight back, and it inspired this sweet portrait. Colors, memories, and a touch of nostalgia came together to create a playful, joyful character.
She reminds me that the simplest childhood pleasures never really leave us. In a home she does the same thing that ice cream did on a summer afternoon: she makes the day feel lighter and a little sweeter.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork
Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Trumpet-shaped flowers roll out a landing strip and a funnel of nectar to guide bees straight to the center.
Pink trumpets speak of admiration and gentle affection.
A bud is a flower holding its breath, wrapping delicate petals in tough green scales until the moment is right.
Buds represent potential and the anticipation of what is to bloom.
Rattly dry seed pods double as maracas, using the wind's shake to scatter their seeds.
Seed pods carry the meaning of abundance to come.
Burrs invented hook-and-loop fastening long before we did, snagging onto fur to catch a free ride.
Burrs stand for attachment and tenacity.
A leaf sheath is the snug collar that wraps a stem, and it curls into a scroll as it dries.
A furled leaf suggests modesty and quiet grace.
