Printed on premium luster paper with rich color and fine detail, protected behind a clear acrylic front, and set in a wood frame. Choose White, Black, or Red Oak.

The Story Behind the Artwork
“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”
One of the many hats I wear is that of a naturopath. For several years I worked for a chain of health and natural food stores that published a quarterly wellness magazine.
This artwork was chosen as the cover of one of those issues, accompanying a feature about living a healthier, more mindful life and cultivating a deeper connection with the natural world around us. That is exactly what I hope it offers in a home too, a quiet daily reminder to slow down, breathe, and stay close to nature.

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.
Autumn leaves (the canopy)
Fall colors were hiding in the leaf all along, only showing once the green chlorophyll steps aside.
Autumn leaves stand for change and letting go.
Firethorn berries (Pyracantha)
Bright berries are basically billboards telling birds to eat up and carry the seeds off to new ground.
Red berries symbolize protection and abundance.
Cotton bolls (the clouds)
A cotton boll is a burst seed pod, and each fluffy fiber is a single stretched-out plant cell.
Cotton represents comfort, purity and usefulness.
Marigold flower (the sun)
Marigolds are the bodyguards of the veggie patch, their scent shooing off many hungry pests.
Marigold signifies warmth, creativity and remembrance.
Broccoli floret
Broccoli is just flower buds we eat early, since leave it too long and it bursts into yellow blooms.
Garden vegetables stand for nourishment and abundance.
Carrots
Carrots were purple and yellow for centuries, and the familiar orange one is a relatively modern makeover.
Root vegetables symbolize grounding and sustenance.
Dill or fennel fronds
Those feathery fronds give caterpillars of swallowtail butterflies a favorite snack and nursery.
Dill traditionally means good cheer and protection.
