Materials & framing

Printed and framed to order, ready to hang when it arrives. Printed on premium luster paper with rich color and fine detail, protected behind a clear acrylic front, and set in a solid wood frame: White (gallery white), Black (matte black) or Red Oak (warm wood).

Size & fit

Available in 8″×10″ and 16″×20″.

Hanging hardware is included. These measurements refer to the print size. The wood frame adds about 0.75″ on each side, so the framed piece is roughly 1.5″ wider and taller than the print.

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

This one joins my series of zebras in the savanna, a series I imagined for a children's room. Like its siblings, its stripes are pieces of dried banana peel, the line along its back is half a Tabebuia pod, and the small red and orange berries at its feet are pyracantha.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

7 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Dried banana peel (the stripes)

A banana plant is not a tree at all but the world's largest herb, and its peel turns dark as it dries, which is exactly what makes these stripes.

Banana, a staple food across Africa, stands for nourishment and playing all the way.

Tabebuia pod half (the back line)

A Tabebuia pod is long and slim, and when it dries it splits cleanly into two halves, letting winged seeds glide away.

A curved pod suggests shelter and a gentle embrace.

Lemon (the sun)

A lemon tree can flower and carry fruit at the same time, so it is always busy making sunshine.

Citrus stands for freshness and bright spirits.

Glossy green leaves

A shiny leaf has a waxy coat that keeps water in and rain off, like a tiny raincoat.

Green leaves mean growth and hope.

Pyracantha berries

Firethorn berries are tiny cousins of the apple, and blackbirds and thrushes strip the bushes bare in winter.

Berries signify abundance and cheer.

Small yellow flower buds

A bud is a flower folded up tight, waiting for the right warmth and light before it opens.

Buds stand for promise and things yet to come.

Curled tendril

A tendril can feel when it touches something and coils around it within minutes, like a tiny green hand.

Tendrils symbolize holding on and gentle connection.
