“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”
I knew from the very beginning that the Cape plumbago flowers would become the sky. Their soft color and quiet presence called for a peaceful yoga pose, one of stillness, inward reflection, mindfulness, and a sense of wholeness.
I composed the figure by hand beneath that gentle blue, letting the flowers set the mood of the whole piece. She was made for the quiet corners of a home, the reading chair, the bedroom wall, anywhere a moment of stillness is welcome.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork
Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.
Plumbago flowers have sticky glands so their seeds hitch a ride on fur and clothes to travel far.
Plumbago symbolizes calm, serenity and shared understanding.
Coreopsis seeds look so much like little bugs that the name literally means resembling a tick.
Yellow daisies stand for cheer, love and new beginnings.
Driftwood is wood that has been tumbled smooth by water, sometimes drifting for years before landing.
Wood represents grounding, strength and quiet stillness.
The veins fanning across a leaf are its highways, carrying water in and sugar back out.
Green leaves symbolize peace, growth and renewal.
Star-shaped red flowers are a hummingbird favorite, offering deep nectar wells and a bright bullseye.
Red star blooms carry love, energy and vitality.
Green berries are simply unripe, still packing on sugar and color before they invite anyone to eat.
Berried sprigs signify abundance and the promise of harvest.
Reeds are hollow-stemmed and bendy, which lets them sway through storms that snap stiffer plants.
Reeds stand for flexibility, music and going with the flow.
