Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

The heart is the core of my creative process. The ability to gather textures, colors, and shapes from the world around me is what truly lies at the heart of my art. Each found element carries its own story, and together they become the beginning of a new creation.

This piece says that as simply as I can, with real petals and leaves arranged into one blooming heart. It was made to live in a home, over a bed, in an entryway, anywhere a daily reminder of love and growing things is welcome.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

8 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Red poppy

A poppy flower can unfurl from its crumpled bud like a silk dress shaken out of a suitcase.

Red poppies symbolize remembrance, and ranunculus means radiant charm.

Red kidney beans

Raw kidney beans actually need a good boil to be safe, they are one bean that insists on cooking.

Beans symbolize prosperity, fertility and good luck.

Bauhinia petals (pink)

Pink petals get their soft glow from pigments called anthocyanins, the same family that reddens autumn leaves.

Pink petals carry gentle love, gratitude and grace.

Purple mallow or geranium flowers

Mallow flowers are cousins of the hibiscus and hollyhock, all part of one big showy family.

Mallow stands for consumed by love and sweet devotion.

Yellow jasmine

Primroses are early birds, often blooming while the last of the frost is still lingering.

Primrose means young love and I cannot live without you.

Clover or oxalis leaves

That rare four-leaf clover is just a genetic hiccup, which is exactly why finding one feels lucky.

Clover symbolizes luck, love and faithfulness.

Fern frond

Ferns are ancient, casting their shade over dinosaurs long before a single flower had ever bloomed.

Ferns represent sincerity, new beginnings and secret bonds.

Foxtail grass

A foxtail seed head is built with tiny backward barbs that hitch a ride on any passing fur.

Grasses signify submission and quiet usefulness.
