Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

The field in spring always calls me to walk among the flowers and breathe them in, and that is the basis for this piece. The sun is a chrysanthemum, the round flower heads on the right are scabiosa, the small round seeds between the flowers are alfalfa, and the purple flowers on the ground are wisteria.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

8 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Pink mallow flower (the dress)

Mallow family flowers, like hibiscus and hollyhock, are cousins of cotton and cacao.

A pink bloom stands for gentleness and joy.

Lavender spikes

Bees love lavender so much that lavender honey has its own soft floral taste.

Lavender means calm, devotion and quiet.

Pink clover blossoms

Each clover head is really dozens of tiny flowers packed together, and bees visit them one by one.

Clover stands for luck and good fortune.

Queen Anne's lace

Wild carrot is the great-grandmother of the orange carrot in your kitchen.

Queen Anne's lace means sanctuary and delicate beauty.

Wisteria blossoms (the purple ground)

Wisteria is a climbing cousin of the bean, and a single vine can live for more than a hundred years.

Wisteria stands for long life and devotion.

Scabiosa heads

A scabiosa seed head is a ball of tiny parachutes, each one ready to float off on the wind.

Scabiosa stands for purity and unfussy love.

Alfalfa seed pods

Alfalfa wraps its seeds in a tightly coiled pod, a little green spiral, and it is one of the oldest crops people ever grew.

Alfalfa stands for life and plenty.

Chrysanthemum (the sun)

Chrysanthemum means golden flower in Greek, and each bloom is really dozens of tiny flowers packed into one head.

A chrysanthemum sun stands for joy and long life.
