Materials & framing

Printed and framed to order, ready to hang when it arrives. Printed on premium luster paper with rich color and fine detail, protected behind a clear acrylic front, and set in a solid wood frame: White (gallery white), Black (matte black) or Red Oak (warm wood).

Size & fit

Available in 8″×10″ and 16″×20″.

Hanging hardware is included. These measurements refer to the print size. The wood frame adds about 0.75″ on each side, so the framed piece is roughly 1.5″ wider and taller than the print.

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

Like the zebra before it, this one came from a simple thought: a series of zebras would be a lovely way to decorate a children's room. The curled pod on its back is half a Tabebuia pod, the black stripes are pieces of dried banana peel, the eye is a hyacinth bean, and the sun is part of an orange hibiscus flower.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

6 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Dried banana peel (the stripes)

A banana plant is not a tree at all but the world's largest herb, and its peel turns dark as it dries, which is exactly what makes these stripes.

Banana, a staple food across Africa, stands for nourishment and playing all the way.

Tabebuia pod half (the back line)

A Tabebuia pod is long and slim, and when it dries it splits cleanly into two halves, letting winged seeds glide away.

A curved pod suggests shelter and a gentle embrace.

Orange hibiscus sun

Most hibiscus flowers open for only a single day, so the plant keeps making new ones all season long.

A hibiscus sun stands for warmth and delicate beauty.

Leaf-and-berry butterfly

Butterflies taste with their feet, so a leaf they land on is also a leaf they sample.

A butterfly stands for change and lightness.

Lavender sprigs (the grass)

Lavender leaves are covered in tiny hairs that hold the scent, so even the leaves smell like summer.

Lavender means calm, devotion and quiet.

Hyacinth bean seed (the eye)

The hyacinth bean seed wears a white stripe along its edge, which is exactly what makes it look like a little eye.

A seed means potential and beginnings.
