sausage tree fruit (the hippo's body)
Kigelia, the sausage tree, grows large woody fruits that can hang from long stalks.

Printed and framed to order, ready to hang when it arrives. Printed on premium luster paper with rich color and fine detail, protected behind a clear acrylic front, and set in a solid wood frame: White (gallery white), Black (matte black) or Red Oak (warm wood).
Printed to order on thick matte paper, shipped rolled for your own frame. We use 189 gsm (10.3 mil) matte paper with a smooth, glare-free finish and archival inks. It ships rolled in a sturdy cardboard tube, may hold a slight curl, and flattens overnight under a book. It fits any standard frame of that size. Prefer it framed? Choose Framed above for a solid wood frame in White, Black or Red Oak.
Available in 10″×8″ and 20″×16″.
Hanging hardware is included. These measurements refer to the print size. The wood frame adds about 0.75″ on each side, so the framed piece is roughly 1.5″ wider and taller than the print.
For unframed prints, the selected size is the paper size and fits a standard frame of that size. A frame adds about 1 inch on each side.
“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”
My inspiration came from the book A Hippopotamus in the Soup, by a classic author who passed away that very week.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork
Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.
Kigelia, the sausage tree, grows large woody fruits that can hang from long stalks.
It gives the hippo a calm, weighty presence and a gentle strength.
Banana plants have layered leaf sheaths that form a soft, fibrous pseudostem rather than a true woody trunk.
Its dark fibers ground the hippo with warmth, shadow, and quiet movement.
Banana bark fibers dry into varied textures and tones, from pale straw to deep brown.
The soft, natural surface gives the face a tender, thoughtful expression.
Tipu tree fruits are winged pods that help the seeds travel on the wind.
They create a light path underfoot, like earth that is ready to carry a story onward.
Feathery grasses use narrow leaves and airy seed heads to move easily with wind.
Their delicate shoots add a feeling of new life rising from the ground.
A flower is the reproductive structure of a flowering plant, often shaped to attract pollinators.
It shines above the hippo like a small memory of joy and tribute.
