“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”
The variety of natural materials I had gathered seemed to be waiting for an earthy creation. As I arranged them, the image of a deer emerged before my eyes. To me the deer is a symbol of groundedness, quiet strength, and a deep connection to the earth.
I followed that image until she stood complete, made entirely of nature's own textures and colors. She was created to bring that grounded quietness into a living space, a still point on the wall in a busy home.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork
Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Bark is a tree's armor, a corky outer layer that shrugs off fire, frost, and hungry teeth.
Bark stands for protection and steadfast strength.
Seed pods are travel cases, splitting open at just the right moment to fling their cargo free.
A seed pod holds the promise of what is to come.
A seed can nap for years, even decades, waiting for the exact cue of warmth and water to wake up.
Seeds symbolize potential and new life.
Eucalyptus trees shed their bark in long ribbons each year, revealing smooth new skin underneath.
Eucalyptus speaks of healing and fresh starts.
