Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

I was at the beach with my granddaughter. Her freedom, her lightness, her joy. That feeling is the whole inspiration for this piece.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

5 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Blue plumbago blooms (the sea)

Plumbago petals hold their sky-blue color unusually well as they dry, which is why they can play a whole sea.

Blue plumbago stands for calm and easy days.

Sunflower petals (the top)

A sunflower head is hundreds of tiny flowers packed together; each petal is a bloom of its own.

Sunflower yellow means warmth and open joy.

Bengal ficus leaves (the arms and legs)

The Bengal ficus can grow aerial roots that become new trunks, so one tree slowly becomes a grove.

Ficus leaves speak of rootedness and family.

Cotton fluff (the clouds)

A cotton boll is the seed's travel coat: the fibers were made to catch wind and carry it far.

Soft clouds stand for daydreams and light hearts.

White petal gull

Gulls ride rising warm air to glide without a single wingbeat, exactly like a petal on a breeze.

The lone bird is freedom on its way somewhere.
