“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”
It began with mandalas made from leaves, twigs, petals, and seeds, arranged on the ground and left for the wind to scatter. Then something unexpected happened. I began to see women's faces in the trunks and branches of trees, and I could not ignore them.
I started collecting natural materials and, back home, carefully composed these faces by hand. Without realizing it, I had found my own artistic language. Every portrait like this one speaks it, and each brings a face the trees showed me into your home.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork
Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Golden shower trees drip so many yellow blooms they look like they are raining sunshine.
These golden cascades symbolize good fortune and warm celebration.
Squeeze a snapdragon bloom and it opens like a little dragon jaw, which is how it got the name.
Pink snapdragons mean graciousness and playful strength.
Tubular red flowers are shaped exactly to fit a hummingbird's long beak like a custom straw.
Fiery red tubular blooms stand for passion and lively spirit.
Long narrow leaves bend instead of tearing in wind, a neat trick for surviving gusts.
Flowing greenery symbolizes freedom, ease and natural grace.
A drying seed pod can twist and split with enough force to fling its seeds several feet.
Seed pods stand for potential and the patient promise of what comes next.
This trailing plant roots from almost any snapped-off piece, making it nearly impossible to kill.
Tradescantia symbolizes resilience and enduring, easygoing friendship.
