Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

I will be honest: there is not really a story behind this one. This particular bloom simply has a way of inviting me to create hair. Every time it comes into my hands, it asks to be arranged into a specially designed hairdo, and I let it lead. The palm here is Bismarckia nobilis, and the rest of the face found its place around that flowing hair.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

7 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Bismarck palm flower stalks (the hair)

The Bismarck palm comes from Madagascar and carries huge silver-blue fan leaves, and its flower stalks hang in long branching strands that dry into these beaded ribbons.

Flowing strands stand for freedom and letting go.

Bismarck palm frond stem

A palm does not grow rings like a tree; its trunk is really a bundle of stiff fibers, which is why palms bend in storms instead of snapping.

Palms stand for resilience and peace.

Dark seed pod

Golden Shower pods can grow longer than your arm and rattle like a maraca when the seeds inside dry out.

Long pods represent patience and hidden sweetness.

Dark red petal (the lips)

Rose petals get their deep color from the same family of pigments that make blueberries blue.

A red petal stands for love and warmth.

Paullinia pods (the necklace)

Paullinia is the family of guarana, whose seeds hold roughly twice the caffeine of a coffee bean, and its pods split open to show seeds that look like little eyes.

A necklace of pods stands for what we choose to carry close.

Curled tendril (the cheek curl)

A tendril can feel when it touches something and coils around it within minutes, like a tiny green hand.

Tendrils symbolize holding on and gentle connection.

Tabebuia seeds (the eyes)

Tabebuia seeds are flat with thin papery wings on both sides, so they glide away from the tree on the wind.

Closed eyes stand for calm and inner peace.
