The Flowers Inside

7 real botanicals live in this piece

Composed by hand by artist Shirley Regev. Every one of them is real.

Corn husks and silk (the hair)

Corn silk is edible and was brewed into a mild tea long before corn became a dinner-plate staple.

Corn stands for abundance, harvest and being generously provided for.

Frangipani, bougainvillea, Tecoma and hibiscus petals (the skirt)

There are over 300 wild rose species, and they've been grown by people for at least five thousand years.

Rose petals symbolize love, beauty and heartfelt devotion.

White petals (the collar and upper skirt)

White petals bounce back nearly all light, which is what makes them almost glow at dusk.

White blooms mean purity, honesty and fresh beginnings.

Green leaves (the skirt band)

The waxy shine on many leaves is a water-repellent coat that keeps them from drowning in rain.

Green leaves symbolize growth, health and steady renewal.

Peacock feather

Feathery plant tufts and bird feathers share a trick, branching filaments that trap air for lift and warmth.

Soft plumes stand for lightness, freedom and gentle grace.

Bark piece (the base plank)

A patch of bark carries a whole city of tiny life, from mosses to insects, in its cracks and ridges.

Weathered wood symbolizes grounding, endurance and rooted strength.

Alfalfa seed pods (the necklace)

Coiled seed cases spring open when they dry unevenly, flicking seeds away like a loaded catapult.

Seeds strung together symbolize hope gathered and kept close.
