Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

This piece celebrates Tu BiShvat, the holiday when nature wakes up after winter and the almond trees I love so much begin to bloom.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

6 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Almond branches (the tree)

An almond tree is the first to wake in late winter, blooming while every other branch still sleeps.

awakening

Pink ranunculus (the blooms)

A ranunculus bloom can hold more than a hundred petals, packed in spirals so tight they look painted.

charm and quiet abundance

Chamomile daisies (in the air)

Chamomile daisies fold their petals down at night and lift them again at sunrise.

rest, patience and calm

Orange peel (the sun)

An orange's peel holds most of the fruit's perfume; its oils burst into scent the moment it is torn.

warmth and bottled sunshine

Almond blossom petals (the carpet)

A petal is a leaf that evolved to be seen: its whole job is to catch an eye.

joy on display

Ivy and cyclamen (at the roots)

Ivy climbs by growing tiny rootlets straight out of its stems, gripping walls with no help at all.

loyalty that holds on
