The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

5 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

White alstroemeria (the crown)

Alstroemeria petals carry speckled runways that guide pollinators straight to the center.

Rose ranunculus (the heart)

A ranunculus can spiral more than a hundred petals into one bloom, each layer thinner than paper.

layered love

Dark violas (the velvet)

Violas are among the few flowers that can bloom through frost, velvet faces in the cold.

quiet resilience

Pyracantha berries (the sparks)

Pyracantha means firethorn in Greek; its berries keep their color deep into winter.

small fires of hope

Bauhinia leaves (the vase)

The bauhinia leaf is split into two rounded lobes, like a pair of wings folded together.
