Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

As a little girl, I dreamed of becoming an artist. I could not wait for my first art lessons at school. Instead, a few discouraging words from my teacher made me question my ability, and my confidence disappeared almost overnight. For many years I believed that chapter of my life had ended.

But some dreams do not disappear. They simply wait patiently until we are ready to find them again. Every piece I create is proof of that, and each one carries a quiet reminder into your home: it is never too late to return to what you love.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

5 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Crimson leaves (the torches)

A red autumn leaf is not dying so much as revealing: anthocyanin pigments build as the green withdraws.

burning bright before rest

Pink vinca (in the pouch)

Vinca blooms steadily from spring to first frost, which made it a symbol of constancy.

gentle fire

Small sunflowers (the embers)

Even small sunflower heads are crowds: every disc holds hundreds of individual florets.

shared warmth

Dried seed pods (the crackle)

Many pods open with an audible snap in dry autumn air, flinging seeds a surprising distance.

release

Twig mat (the ground)

Fallen twigs are a forest's slow mulch, feeding the soil that feeds the next tree.
