Bauhinia leaf (the top of the hat)
Heart-shaped leaves are so common that botanists gave the shape its own word, cordate, straight from the Latin for heart.
A heart-shaped leaf naturally speaks of love and affection.

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”
There is a Hebrew expression, a cabbage head. This time a single leaf claimed the place of the hat instead. I took that leaf from a cabbage I had bought for a meal. A moment before it became chopped cabbage, it reminded me how I have always been charmed by women who wear hats.
There is something about them that tells a story, adds presence, creates a character. So the cabbage leaf became part of a hat, and what had been part of an everyday vegetable received new life in a portrait. Sometimes all it takes is a different way of looking. I love imagining her doing the same in someone's home, quietly adding character to the room.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork
Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.
Heart-shaped leaves are so common that botanists gave the shape its own word, cordate, straight from the Latin for heart.
A heart-shaped leaf naturally speaks of love and affection.
The blotchy patterns on an aging leaf are pigments and fungi painting a slow watercolor as it breaks down.
A weathered leaf stands for memory and the beauty of aging.
Cherry blossoms bloom in a rush and drop within about a week, which is exactly why people treasure them.
Pink blossom means gentleness, grace, and fleeting beauty.
Petals are really specialized leaves that traded chlorophyll for bright pigments to flag down pollinators.
A single soft petal speaks of tenderness.
A brown leaf has drained its useful nutrients back into the plant, leaving mostly the sturdy vein skeleton behind.
The fallen leaf represents release and rest.
Green is simply the light that chlorophyll refuses to absorb and bounces back to our eyes.
Green leaves mean renewal and hope.
