Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

Corn husks and corn silk are materials I love deeply. They blend so naturally with imagination. Here the material itself brought the witch on her broom to me.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

5 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Corn husks (the witch)

Corn husks are the ear's own wrapping leaves; dried, they turn to a pale gold parchment.

The husk figure is imagination built from the pantry.

Corn silk (the hair)

Every thread of corn silk leads to a single kernel; a full head of silk means a full ear.

Streaming silk is speed and wild freedom.

Twig broom with a pine needle brush

Pine needles are leaves rolled into needles to save water, which also makes a perfect broom.

The broom is the everyday made magical.

Dark leaf bats

These bats are small dark leaves; leaves and bat wings both stretch a thin skin over ribs.

The scattering bats are the night making room.

Purple petal shoe

Purple pigments in petals are anthocyanins, the same family that colors berries and autumn leaves.

One bright shoe is the detail that makes the character.
