The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

The daughter of a good friend of mine got married, and this piece was my gift, displayed as a large print at the wedding reception.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

6 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

White alstroemeria (the dress)

White alstroemeria stands for devotion and support, a fitting fabric for a wedding gown.

pure devotion

Dark leaf (the suit)

A single leaf's veins branch like a tailor's pattern, delivering water to every corner of the blade.

quiet strength

Alstroemeria garland (the arch)

Alstroemeria blooms open one after another along the stem, so a garland of them keeps celebrating for weeks.

the threshold of a new chapter

Strawberries (climbing the post)

In parts of Bavaria, strawberries were once tied to cattle horns as offerings for a sweet year.

sweetness ahead

Violas (the guests)

The viola's French name, pensee, gave us the word pansy: it means a thought.

loving thoughts

Wilted pansy birds (above the arch)

Pansy petals fold like wings as they dry, which is how two spent blooms became wedding guests.
