Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

Whenever I come across a burst of color like this one, the meeting of plumeria with cassia blossoms, it takes me straight to the Rolling Stones song She's a Rainbow.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

5 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Plumeria blooms (the hair)

Plumeria flowers release most of their perfume after dark, calling in night moths as pollinators.

Plumeria stands for beauty and new beginnings.

Golden cassia blossoms (the hair)

Cassia trees drop whole chains of golden flowers at once, carpeting the ground below in a day.

Golden cassia is generosity in full bloom.

Dusty miller lashes

The silver of dusty miller is a coat of fine hairs that reflects harsh light and holds in water.

Silver foliage stands for quiet elegance.

Bougainvillea petal lips

Bougainvillea's color comes from papery bracts, leaves in costume; the true flowers are tiny and white.

Bougainvillea speaks of passion worn lightly.

Green cassia sprig (at the ear)

Cassia leaflets fold together at night, as if the tree closes its eyes to sleep.

A green sprig tucked close means growth kept near.
