Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

As a little girl, I dreamed of becoming an artist. I could not wait for my first art lessons at school. Instead, a few discouraging words from my teacher made me question my ability, and my confidence disappeared almost overnight. For many years I believed that chapter of my life had ended.

But some dreams do not disappear. They simply wait patiently until we are ready to find them again. Every piece I create is proof of that, and each one carries a quiet reminder into your home: it is never too late to return to what you love.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

8 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Lemon slice (the sun)

One lemon tree can flower and fruit at the same time, holding blossom and ripe fruit together on a branch.

zest, clarity, and cheer

Firethorn berries (Pyracantha)

Bright orange berries cling on through the cold as a bird's pantry, long after the last leaves let go.

hope and enduring warmth

White leadtree pods (the legs)

A single pea pod can cradle up to ten peas, each one a seed neatly packed in its own snug pocket.

growth and prosperity

Dried banana peel

A drying pod twists like a wrung towel until it splits, launching its seeds off to start again elsewhere.

release and new life

Lavender leaves

Dusty miller's velvety silver leaves are coated in fine hairs that reflect the sun and lock in moisture.

cherished protection

Purple basil flower spike

Once basil sends up its flower spike, cooks race to pinch it, since blooming turns the leaves bitter.

good wishes and love

Geranium flowers (pink)

Impatiens seed pods are so touchy that a passing brush sets them off, scattering seeds in every direction.

warm feeling and motherly love

Grass and pine-needle groundcover

Grass grows from its base, not its tip, which is the quiet secret behind its endless comeback.

humble endurance
