Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

Nothing begins within a frame. Everything I create is born from freedom: the freedom to wander, to dream, to observe, to imagine, and to remain open to the unexpected.

Nature has taught me not to hold on too tightly, not to force, but to trust the creative journey and allow each piece to find its own moment in the world. When an artwork finally arrives in a frame on your wall, it carries all of that freedom with it.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

6 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Large brown autumn leaves (the mane)

Big broad leaves are solar panels on stems, grabbing as much light as their shady spot allows.

Fallen leaves symbolize transformation and the cycle of life.

Long striped seed pods (possibly mesquite or acacia)

You can often read the seeds inside a dry pod like beads on a string, one bump per future plant.

Seed pods represent fertility and hidden promise.

Yellow daisy flowers (the eyes)

A daisy is a crowd, not one flower, with the center made of dozens of tiny florets packed together.

The black-eyed daisy stands for justice, encouragement and cheer.

Green maple or sycamore leaves

The classic lobed maple leaf is so iconic a country put it right on its flag.

Green leaves signify vitality and renewal.

Cotton (the muzzle)

Cotton fibers are almost pure cellulose, which is why they feel soft yet make such tough thread.

Cotton means comfort and gentle protection.

Amaranth flower spikes (dried)

A single amaranth or dock spike can carry thousands of seeds, feeding birds long into winter.

Amaranth stands for immortality and unfading affection.
