Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

Monkeys are lovable and funny. I remembered how, at our home in Kenya, a big family of vervet monkeys would pass through every morning.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

6 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Bauhinia leaves (the monkey)

Vervet monkeys travel in family troops, the whole group crossing a garden in single file.

devoted rest

Cotton fluff (the chest)

Every cotton boll holds around half a million soft fibers, the hairs of its seeds.

softness as strength

Acorn caps (the eyes)

An acorn's cap is called a cupule, a fitted hat grown by the oak for each seed.

wide-eyed wonder

Rugged bark (the tree)

Bark thickness is a tree's biography: rough ridges record decades of growth and weather.

something worth holding

Yellow buds (the blossoms)

Buds hold a whole bloom folded inside, spring waiting for its cue.

small rewards on the climb

Enterolobium pods (the ears)

Enterolobium pods curl into dark rounded discs; the tree is nicknamed the monkey ear tree.
