This artwork is a tribute to Jane Goodall, whose life's work and legacy have left an invaluable message of compassion, respect, and connection with the natural world. Her dedication to protecting our planet continues to inspire us, and it reminds us of our deep responsibility toward all living beings on Earth.
I composed this playful monkey by hand from real leaves and blooms, in her honor. I hope it hangs in a home as a small, joyful reminder of that message, especially in rooms where children are growing up curious about the wild world.

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.
Elephant bush (Portulacaria afra) (the tree foliage)
Small leaves lose less water and catch less wind, a handy combo for a breezy treetop.
Green leaves mean vitality and renewal.
Large lobed green leaves (grape or mulberry type)
Grape leaves can shift their angle through the day to grab the best light, like slow-motion solar panels.
Vine leaves stand for abundance and hospitality.
Dusty miller (Jacobaea maritima)
That silvery fuzz is a coat of tiny hairs that shades the leaf and traps moisture in dry heat.
