Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

If in real life I do not stand on my hands, then playing with natural materials lets me try every variation of the handstand I like.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

5 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Plumeria petals (the leotard)

Plumeria petals are thick with natural wax, which keeps their color deep long after drying.

Layered petals stand for strength worn gracefully.

Dried bauhinia leaves (the limbs)

Dried bauhinia leaves keep a leathery flexibility, bending like limbs instead of snapping.

The supple leaf is the body that bends and holds.

Dusty miller (the sash)

Dusty miller's silver felt is a sunscreen of fine hairs, grown to survive bright dry summers.

Silver foliage stands for quiet elegance.

Softened palm frond (the beam)

Palm fronds are built of parallel fibers, which is why a dried frond stays straight as a beam.

The steady frond is the ground you trust.

Cassia sprigs (the grass)

Cassia leaflets grow in tidy facing pairs, a small audience lined up along every stem.

Fresh sprigs are the quiet crowd cheering you on.
