Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

My curiosity: how does everything look through the eyes of cats who love sitting on a windowsill?

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

6 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Leaf cat and bark cat (the pair)

Cats spend most of the night alert while we sleep; their eyes need only a sixth of the light ours do.

companionship in the dark

Green stem window (the frame)

A cut stem keeps drawing water for days, which is why green arches stay fresh in arrangements.

looking out together

Ripe strawberries (the night crop)

Strawberries ripen fastest in warm nights, sweetening while the garden sleeps.

sweetness growing unseen

Carrot rows (the planter)

A carrot's feathery tops were the fashion first: Europeans wore them as hat plumes before eating the root.

hidden treasure

Ranunculus lamps (the glow)

Ranunculus petals have a mirror layer that bounces light, which is why they seem to shine.

light in the off-season

Leek moon (the slice)

Slice a leek and you find pale rings inside rings, one for each stretch of growing.
