Wheatgrass (the hair)
Grass grows from the base, not the tip, which is exactly why it bounces back after a mowing.
Grass symbolizes renewal, resilience and the quiet return of life.

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”
As a naturopath working for a chain of health and natural food stores, I was often around products that were about to be discarded. It always felt like a shame to let them go to waste, so I found a way to give them a new creative life.
This wheatgrass was no longer suitable for use, but it still held beauty and potential. From that forgotten bundle of grass a lady appeared, a figure quietly looking back at me, waiting to be created. Now she looks out from the print instead, bringing her fresh green calm to whichever room she lives in.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork
Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.
Grass grows from the base, not the tip, which is exactly why it bounces back after a mowing.
Grass symbolizes renewal, resilience and the quiet return of life.
Rose petals are edible and have flavored jams and perfumes for thousands of years.
Rose petals stand for love, beauty and tender affection.
Many petals are deep purple-red because pigments called anthocyanins act like the flower's own sunscreen.
Deep-toned petals suggest mystery, depth and quiet allure.
Grasses do bloom, they just skip petals and let the wind carry their pollen instead of bugs.
Tiny grass flowers symbolize humility and understated grace.
A thin twig bends far before it snaps thanks to springy fibers running its whole length.
Slender branches speak of flexibility and gentle strength.
Spiral shapes show up again and again in nature because they pack the most growth into the least space.
Spirals stand for growth, journeys and life unfolding step by step.
