“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”
In an ancient oak grove I found a fallen branch covered with lichen. I immediately felt it was meant to become part of a portrait, a combination of textures and colors unlike anything else in the grove. To this branch I added edible pansy flowers and sprouts that were already past their best for eating, transforming them into a new creative expression.
This piece brings together two worlds that inspire me: wandering through nature and discovering the beauty within healthy, nourishing elements. She carries both of those worlds with her into the home she joins.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork
Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.
Lichen is two lifeforms living as one, a fungus and an alga together, and it thrives only where the air is clean.
resilience and quiet partnership
Moss has no roots at all and drinks water straight through its leaves, reviving fast after the first rain.
maternal love and patient endurance
Microgreens are simply baby vegetables, yet they can pack far more nutrients than the full-grown plant.
new beginnings and fresh potential
Pansy comes from the French pensee, meaning thought, since the flower seems to nod as if quietly musing.
loving thoughts and remembrance
Calendula petals are edible and were once dubbed poor man's saffron for the golden color they lend to food.
joy, warmth, and the sun
Eucalyptus leaves hang edge-on to dodge the harsh midday sun and are brimming with fragrant, cooling oil.
protection, healing, and calm
A petal is a leaf that swapped its green for color purely to charm the pollinators passing by.
