Shirley Regev, the artist

The Story Behind the Artwork

“Every leaf, twig, petal, and seed becomes a brushstroke.”

I grow strawberries in pots, and I enjoy eating them just as much. She almost looks like a Strawberry Shortcake girl to me. Sweet, colorful, and full of the joy that comes from simple things grown with love.

That is the whole story of this piece, and maybe that is why I am so fond of her. She was made to bring that same easy sweetness into a home, a small burst of red cheer for a kitchen wall or a little girl's room.

The Botanicals Behind the Artwork

6 real botanicals composed the original artwork

Shirley arranged each leaf, pod, stem, and natural fiber by hand before photographing the finished composition.

Strawberries (the hair)

Strawberries wear their seeds on the outside, around 200 tiny ones freckling every berry.

Strawberries symbolize sweetness, love and small perfect pleasures.

Strawberry leaves (the hair)

Strawberry plants send out runners, little stems that root nearby and clone themselves into a patch.

Strawberry leaves stand for foresight and steady, spreading growth.

Pistachio shells (the collar)

A pistachio splits its own shell open with a tiny audible pop as the nut swells inside.

Pistachios are an old symbol of wellbeing, health and happiness.

Hopbush florets (Dodonaea) (the collar)

Hydrangea blooms can change color depending on how acidic the soil is, like a living litmus test.

These clustered blooms mean heartfelt gratitude and understanding.

Pink rose petal (the lips)

A single rose petal is thick enough to hold dew in perfect little beads on its waxy face.

A rose petal at the lips whispers of love and tender words.

Syrian maple pod and chinaberry flowers (the earrings)

Dangling flowers sway to shake loose pollen and to nod visitors toward their nectar.

Small hanging blooms symbolize delicate charm and quiet beauty.
